Vice-captain KL Rahul tests positive for COVID-19 days before flying to West Indies

In a blow to Team India, KL Rahul has tested positive for COVID-19 just days before the five-match T20I series against West Indies. Originally scheduled to leave for West Indies later this week, he most likely will not make it.

Following surgery in Germany, the right-handed batsman is recovering at the National Cricket Academy. It is unknown when Rahul tested positive and if he will be able to fly to the Caribbean islands in time. In the T20I squad, Rahul was the only player named.

The BCCI confirmed after the squad announcement that Rahul would only travel to WI if he recovered in time. As part of confirming his fitness for West Indies, the senior batsman shared a video of himself working out at NCA.

He may now miss the tour due to the positive test result. Since IPL 2022, Rahul has been out of action. A groin injury prevented him from leading Team India in the five-match T20I series against South Africa. As a result, he was unable to participate in the UK tour as well.

Rahul might now be seen in action against Zimbabwe next. A report in PTI recently suggested that he might also lead the Men in Blue in the three ODIs, to be played on August 18, 20 and 22.

While Rahul’s participation in the series is in doubt now, Kuldeep Yadav has reportedly cleared the fitness test and will leave for West Indies soon. He was forced to miss the South Africa series and the UK tour due to the blow on his hand.

India and West Indies will lock horns in 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is to be played from July 22 to August 7. The last two T20Is of the series will be played in USA.
