A district police investigation led to the discovery of an illegal drug manufacturing facility in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, after two peddlers were arrested for allegedly smuggling habit-forming and intoxicating medicines.

A total of 4.05 lakh tablets were seized from its owner Usman Rajpoot by the police. An investigation has been launched by the local administration into the unit.

A police remand has been issued for Usman in Amritsar. Different parts of Punjab were being supplied with banned drugs, according to the police. Interrogating Nishan Sharma and Rajiv Kumar, who were arrested in the Namak Mandi area on December 21, led to the bust of the unit. Their possessions included 29,920 tablets of tramadol, a banned drug, and Rs 29,000 in cash.

During interrogation, Police Commissioner Jaskaran Singh said the duo admitted to buying the pills from Usman at Rapport Remedies in Dehradun. Uttarakhand’s drug authorities revoked the unit’s license in October. He continued to manufacture tramadol and other intoxicating tablets despite the cancellation of his firm’s license.

A record of the factory has been seized and its links with other suppliers are being investigated, he said.

The unit has been operational for several years, according to sources. It also supplied drugs to other parts of the country besides Punjab.
