There will be only the second time in the history of the Punjab Legislative Assembly that a confidence motion will be debated and voted upon on the last day of the session.

It took several legal hurdles and constitutional concerns flagged by Governor Banwarilal Purohit for the Aam Aadmi Party’s government to call the 16th Vidhan Sabha.

In 1981, former CM Darbara Singh had brought the confidence motion in the 8th Vidhan Sabha.

Most of the special session, however, was characterized by a ruckus because of opposition to the special session. Since the first day of the session, two members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have boycotted the assembly.

A furious Kultar Singh Sandhwan warned Congress MLAs to be prepared to face action on Monday because of their conduct in the last two days.

According to Sandhwan, all Assembly members should participate in Monday’s debate and enrich democratic traditions by participating in it.

There has only been one other time in the history of the Assembly when a confidence motion has been debated and voted on. Rather than disrupting the proceedings, the Opposition MLAs should express their views on the floor of the House.

Both BJP MLAs have already stated that they will not attend the Assembly or participate in the debate on the motion of confidence.

State BJP general secretary Subhash Sharma said protests would be held across the state and near Baba Sahib Ambedkar’s statue to protest the AAP government’s unconstitutional move.
Bhagwant Mann had moved the confidence motion in the Assembly on September 27 and said it was necessitated as the BJP and the Congress joined forces against the democratically-elected government.
