Student moves SC against Karnataka HC verdict upholding hijab ban in colleges

A plea was filed Tuesday in the Supreme Court challenging a Karnataka High Court verdict which dismissed pleas seeking permission to wear hijab inside the classroom, saying Hijab is not an essential religious practice in Islamic faith.

The Supreme Court has been petitioned by a Muslim student in response to the high court judgement.

Earlier today, the High Court dismissed petitions submitted by a section of Muslim students from the Government Pre-University Girls College in Udupi. These students were seeking permission to wear hijab inside classroom.

School uniforms are constitutionally permissible because the students cannot object to them, according to the high court.
