Sikhs of America has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to release all Sikhs who have been detained in Indian jails for over 30 years.

In a letter to Modi, the Sikhs of America asked him to set up a committee to examine the issue and to find out how many such Sikhs are in prison. There are a number of Sikhs in jail despite having completed their court mandates, according to the report.

At an event here on Sunday, the letter was presented to visiting External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, claiming their number is close to 800.

The government alleged that most of them committed political crimes in Punjab during the 1980s and 1990s in an anti-terrorist draconian environment created by the Congress.

According to a letter signed by Kamaljit Singh Soni and Jasdip Singh, chairman of Sikhs of America, “Each year, different political parties bring this issue up to get votes and manipulate the masses.”.

In a letter urging the prime minister to “form a committee to investigate” this issue, the Sikhs of America urged him to establish a report as to the number of “Bandi Sikhs” in jails around the globe.

The Sikhs of America wrote in response to Prime Minister Modi’s government celebrating the sacrifices made by Sikhs and Sikh Gurus on numerous occasions, “In this spirit, we request you to grant clemency and pardon to these Bandi Sikhs who have been in jail for more than 30 years.”
