Sukhbir Singh Badal, SAD president, has appealed to expelled SAD leader Bibi Jagir Kaur to reconsider her decision of contesting against SAD candidate Harjinder Singh Dhami before the elections for the coveted position of president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) tomorrow.
A meeting between Sukhbir and SGPC members was held ahead of the election for president, office-bearers, and the executive body. Teja Singh Samundri Hall has been scheduled for tomorrow for a meeting of the members.
AAP-led state government and BJP-led central government are allegedly interfering in Sikh affairs and attempting to weaken SAD by wresting control of the SGPC.
In an effort to strengthen the SGPC and the SAD, he asked Bibi Jagir Kaur “not stab the SAD in the back” at the urging of “outside” parties.
Dhami saheb should win unanimously, he appealed to Bibi Jagir Kaur in the morning.
In response to the question of how many SAD members would come out openly in support of Dhami, he said, “I don’t see her as a challenge.”. The members who support Dhami saheb were in a detailed discussion with me. It will be an historic victory for him,” he predicted.
Bibi Jagir Kaur, the former president of the SGPC, is confident of her victory. There have already been 90 members who have expressed solidarity with her. By morning, this number could be higher. There is a fear of ‘backlash’ from the leadership of the party that prevents most of them from coming forward openly. “Members who raise their voices or point out wrongdoings in the party have routinely been ousted,” she said.
While Dhami said, “I am fairly certain that this contest will be one-sided in my favor.”
During his tenure as 44th president of the SGPC, Dhami replaced Bibi Jagir Kaur as SGPC chief in 2021-2022.
