According to police, Riyaz Bhati was arrested in connection with an extortion case by Mumbai’s Anti Extortion Cell on Monday.
An extortion case was registered at Versova Police Station against Riyaz Bhati, who is close to underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.
An official reports that a Versova businessman was threatened and demanded a car worth Rs 30 lakh and cash worth Rs 7.5 lakh.
Chhota Shakeel, Dawood Ibrahim’s close aide, and Salim Fruit, Shakeel’s relative, are also named in the FIR.
Reports from news agency PTI indicate that the Mumbai crime branch’s Anti Extortion Cell (AEC) held the accused in Andheri west.
The court will hear Riyaz Bhati’s case on Tuesday.
A number of extortion, land grabbing, and firing charges had been filed against Bhati in the past.
According to officials, he had also attempted to flee the country using fake passports in 2015 and 2020.
