In a road rage case, former PPCC chief Navjot Singh Sidhu is serving a one-year sentence in Patiala Jail, which was released prematurely on January 26.

A state official said the state government could facilitate Sidhu’s premature release under the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrations, which allow special remissions for a certain category of prisoners, even though Bhagwant Mann, who also holds the Jails portfolio, has not yet announced Sidhu’s release. Three phases of release were planned: August 15, 2022, January 26, 2023, and August 15, 2023.

Sidhu is not the only prisoner whose family is waiting for the special remission. There are 50 others as well. The Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party government should clarify whether the Cabinet approved it and forwarded a list of Punjab prisoners. If the Cabinet has failed to do so, it deserves condemnation,” said Opposition Leader Partap Singh Bajwa.

Asserting that the state government had been ineffective in getting the benefits for Punjab prisoners under the Union government’s scheme, he sought intervention from Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit. Congress leaders from the Sidhu camp, however, alleged that the AAP government was playing into the hands of the BJP.

There is no likelihood of such an agenda being taken ahead of January 26 due to the postponement of the Cabinet meeting scheduled for February 1.
