In today’s announcement, Balwant Singh Rajoana, who is on death row for the murder of Punjab’s then chief minister, distanced himself from the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha, which is organizing a protest in Mohali for the release of “Bandi Singhs,” and questioned their intentions.
Rajoana stated during a visit to the government hospital here that he had nothing to do with the morcha and he was and always would be an Akali. The morcha organisers were asked to reveal their political affiliation, and he questioned why the morcha was not raking up political parties’ “wrongdoings.”
On February 8, several protesters demanding the release of Sikh prisoners clashed with the police on the Chandigarh-Mohali border as they attempted to approach CM Bhagwant Mann’s official residence. The clash resulted in the injuries of many police officers. In addition to many unidentified individuals, seven activists associated with the morcha were arrested.
