The Jagannath Temple in Puri was hit by a stampede-like situation that injured at least six girl students.

It is reported that the girls are in stable condition.

One police officer said the 70 students came to Puri on Monday for a picnic during the Christmas holidays from Hrudananda High School in Rasgovindpur, Mayurbhanj district.

Before returning home, they visited the shrine in the evening after spending the day at the sea beach.

According to a temple office-bearer, the girls fainted as they climbed the 22 steps (‘Baisi Pahacha’) to the temple around 8 pm.

During the day, the temple was busy with visitors.

Girls from classes 9 and 10 were later rescued and taken to a local hospital for treatment.
