The first women to be promoted to the rank of Director General of Police (DGP) in Punjab are Gurpreet Kaur Deo and Shashi Prabha Dwivedi. In an order issued by the state Department of Home Affairs today, the duo is one of seven Punjab Police ADGPs promoted to DGP status.

The most senior of the promotees is Deo, an IPS officer from the 1993 batch. She is also the first woman to serve as an IPS officer in the Punjab Police. “I am delighted at the promotion,” she said in a brief statement. Varinder Kumar has also been promoted to the rank of DGP. Rajendra Namdeo Dhoke, Jitendra Kumar Jain, Satish Kumar Asthana, and Ishwar Singh are others.

As a result of the promotions, the Punjab Police has become top-heavy, with 13 officers holding the DGP rank
