The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) announced on Friday that it has approved a $800 million credit line to buffer local countries from the spike in global fuel prices partially caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Increased fuel prices have pushed up fertiliser rates as well as the price of staple foods like corn and beans in Central American nations. Dante Mossi, president of CABEI, said the operation will directly affect millions of consumers. In addition, “the subsidies mitigate the effects of the increase in fuel prices on consumer products, basic services, transportation and supplies,” Mossi said. According to CABEI, each of the eight members of the group, including the founding members as well as non-founding members, may receive up to $200 million in financing. The bank, created 61 years ago to fund the development of Central American nations, may also expand the credit line using external funding, according to the statement. Source: Reuters
