Navjot Sidhu’s supporters are upset that the state government did not grant the Congress leader remission on Republic Day.

He will no longer be welcomed outside the jail as originally planned.

The Patiala Central Jail was rumored to release him on Thursday. On Wednesday, even his exercise equipment was removed from the jail.

Last May, Sidhu surrendered in court after being convicted in a 1988 road rage case.

It was unclear earlier whether Sidhu would be released from prison early after serving a one-year sentence. To welcome him, his supporters put up posters and banners at his Yadavindra Enclave house.

On Wednesday evening, senior counsel HPS Verma, who represented Sidhu in court, told The Tribune that Sidhu will meet with all of you outside the jail tomorrow.

“I have no clue” about Sidhu’s release, said Patiala Jail Superintendent Manjit Singh Tiwana. Until I receive the orders, I cannot comment.”
