Local Body Polls in J&K: After 2 Years, Election Body Decides to Re-Poll PoK Candidates

Two Pakistani nationals managed to contest the DDC election in December 2020, so the election authorities decided to re-poll the Jammu and Kashmir local body elections on Monday. There will be re-elections today for the Drugmulla and Hajin council seats.

Kupwara district’s Drugmulla and Banidpora district’s Hajin are reserved for women. The DDC election in December 2020 was won by two Pakistani nationals in both seats.

After complaints about the nationalities of Somia Sadaf and Shazia Begum, the move was made hours before the election results were to be declared. Following a probe, the Election Commission declared the earlier polls null and void and ordered a re-poll.

During the investigation, both women were found to be residents of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). As part of the government’s rehabilitation policy for surrendered militants in 2010, they had married militants and entered Kashmir illegally with their spouses.
