Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled Kartavya Path here on Thursday evening with no prominent opposition leaders present.
The attendance of senior Congress leaders at the ceremony on ‘Kartavya Path’, previously known as Rajpath and stretching between Rashtrapati Bhawan and India Gate, was not immediately known.
In addition to Amit Shah and J P Nadda, other dignitaries attended the mega event, including film stars, diplomats, and bureaucrats.
At the event, in addition to Shah and Nadda, Union ministers Jitendra Singh, Dharmendra Pradhan, Kiren Rijiju, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hardeep Singh Puri and Anupriya Patel also participated.
Among those in attendance were Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, film star Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and singer Mohit Chauhan.
Security personnel refused to allow many people to enter the venue following the event so they could see the revamped stretch on Friday.
“My family and I went here to see the inaugurated stretch, but security personnel barred us from entering,” Rizan, a resident of Mayur Vihar,
Multiple layers of security checks were conducted along ‘Kartavya Path’, with a heavy deployment of police personnel.
The statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was also unveiled by Prime Minister Modi at India Gate. A number of arrangements had been made by the traffic police to ensure smooth vehicular movement in central Delhi.
The Central Vista redevelopment project involves building a new triangular Parliament building, a common secretariat, revamping the three-kilometer Rajpath, building an office and residence for the prime minister, and building an enclave for the vice president.
