On Friday, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the chief of Dera Sacha Sauda, was granted parole for 40 days in Haryana’s Sunaria jail.
A byelection for Adampur is scheduled for November 3, just ahead of the move.
He was released from prison in June on a month-long parole.
It had been three weeks since he was granted furlough in February.
At the Dera’s headquarters in Sirsa, where the sect’s headquarters are located, the sect chief was jailed for 20 years for raping two women disciples. A special CBI court convicted him in August 2017 in Panchkula.
Additionally, he and four others were found guilty last year of conspiring to kill Dera manager Ranjit Singh in 2002. A journalist was murdered more than 16 years ago by the Dera chief and three others.
