According to the police, two farmers were shot at and another suffered a head injury when they attempted to stop illegal mining in Dineke village in the district’s Makhu block.
In addition to arresting two people in connection with the attack, six others have been booked for attempted murder.
Three members of a family have been injured; their condition is stable, according to officials.
In his complaint, farmer Mukhtiar Singh (55) claimed that some people dug sand from his fields on Wednesday. According to him, they shot at us and attacked us with lathis when we confronted them.
The same persons had also attempted to dig out sand from his fields in the past, according to him.
The eight accused have been charged under IPC sections 307, 336, 506, 323, 148, and 149, as well as Arms Act sections 25, 27, 54, and 59.
We have identified the arrested suspects as Tehal Singh and Jagroop Singh. In addition to the rifle, a tractor-trailer and a motorcycle without a registration number were seized.
In the meantime, illegal sand mining continues unabated in the border district. We have registered 22 FIRs and arrested 12 people in the last month.
Over 130 people have been accused of illegal mining in 76 cases registered by the police in the last six months. Furthermore, more than 70 tractor-trailers have been seized.
