Delhi and Punjab legislators also received threat calls: Haryana minister Anil Vij

Chandigarh: Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij on Monday said that not only Haryana MLAs but legislators from Delhi and Punjab received threat calls as well from an extortion gang busted by STF recently.

After some Haryana MLAs received threat calls, Anil Vij said, “Our STF has done a great job in the matter. As per info, an Afghani national had brought the sim card; IP address was from Pakistan… our team arrested 6 people from different places.”

“About 55 ATM cards, 84 SIM cards, 30-35 checkbooks and mobiles have been recovered from 6 arrested persons. Further investigation is underway,” he added.

Vij went on to add that threats were received by three MLAs from Punjab and two MLAs from Delhi’s AAP. IT experts are scrutinizing the matter.

Four MLAs from Haryana had received such calls between June 24 and 28 from multiple phone numbers which were traced to West Asian countries and operated from Pakistan, STF Inspector General of Police Satheesh Balan had told reporters in Gurugram last month.

Two members of the gang hailing from Uttar Pradesh were arrested from Mumbai while the other four, all from Bihar, were arrested from Muzaffarpur.

During investigations, it was found that threats and extortion demands were routed through some Pakistani residents.

The accused do not belong to any terrorist organisation and were cyber fraudsters who had taken advantage of the recent widely publicised incidents of crime in Punjab and were trying to exploit the situation.
