Tamil Nadu’s Cabinet approved the promulgation of an ordinance regulating online gambling on Monday.
MK Stalin chaired the Cabinet meeting that took this decision after the draft ordinance had been finalized.
Government officials said it would become effective once Governor R N Ravi assents to it. A new law was announced by the Chief Minister in June this year to curb online gambling, and the state government constituted a panel led by retired Madras High Court Justice K Chandru to advise on the promulgation of an ordinance to regulate online gambling.
On June 27, 2022, the recommendation was presented to the Chief Minister and put before the Cabinet for consideration.
A Cabinet meeting was held today to discuss the draft ordinance after receiving information regarding the impact of online gaming on students from the School Education Department.
Based on the views expressed by the Law Department, the draft ordinance was prepared on August 29,2022 after a survey was conducted from the general public via e-mail and consultations with stakeholders.
