Earlier today, a CBI court in Mohali sentenced two former police officials to life imprisonment in a 1993 fake encounter case. As a result of the court’s verdict on October 27, retired sub-inspectors Shamsher Singh (76) and Jagtar Singh (72) were convicted.
During police firing, Harbans Singh, a resident of Uboke, along with an unknown person (later named Raju), was shown as killed. The court pronounced the sentence today. As a result of the trial court’s findings, the encounter was deemed to be a fake. As per Sections 120-B and 302 and 218 of the IPC, Shamsher Singh and Jagtar Singh were convicted.
According to Sections 120-B and 302, both suspects were sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs 1 lakh each. Under Section 218 of the Penal Code, they were sentenced to two years in prison and a fine of Rs 5,000 each.
According to the Tarn Taran Sadar police, on April 15, 1993, three militants attacked the police party when it was taking Harbans Singh, a resident of Uboke, who was in custody, to recover arms and ammunition from the Chambal drain area, as he revealed. An unidentified militant and Harbans Singh were killed during cross-firing.
The Tarn Taran Sadar police station registered a case against unknown militants on April 15, 1993 under Sections 302, 307, and 34 of the IPC and Sections 25, 54, and 59 of the Arms Act.
