It was a bird strike that caused a burning smell in the cabin of an Akasa Air flight that had been en route to Bengaluru from here, a DGCA official said on Saturday.

According to the official, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation is investigating the incident.

It was not immediately clear how many passengers were on board the flight.

“VT-YAE, operating Akasa Air’s flight AKJ1103 from Mumbai to Bangalore, was forced to turn back due to a burning smell that increased with increasing thrust,” said the official.

A response from the airline was awaited.

However, no other abnormality was observed, including in engine parameters, according to the DGCA official.

Bird remains were found during the inspection of engine number 1 of the aircraft, he said, adding that “the burning smell was caused by bird strikes.”

On August 7 of this year, Akasa Air began operations.
