It is expected that a special court here will rule on the bail plea of former Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik in a money laundering case involving fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim and his aides on Wednesday. Following lengthy arguments put forward by both sides, special judge R N Rokade reserved his decision on Malik’s bail plea on November 14.
Earlier, the court said it would issue its order on November 24. As a result, the matter was adjourned until November 30, saying that the order wasn’t ready yet.
Malik was arrested in February by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). He is in judicial custody and receiving treatment at a private hospital. In July, Malik moved a regular bail plea before the special court.
He sought bail, claiming that money laundering is not a predicate offence against him.
However, the probe agency opposed the bail stating the case against Dawood Ibrahim and his henchmen was a predicate offense.
According to the ED, the accused was dealing with Dawood Ibrahim’s sister Hasina Parkar and his innocence was beyond doubt.
Based on an FIR filed by the NIA against Dawood Ibrahim and his aides under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention Act), the ED has filed a case against Malik.
